Swimming in Shark Infested Waters

As a medical mama, life sometimes feels like swimming in shark infested waters. On the surface, everything looks calm. There may not even be any significant waves. Then, a shark’s fin pierces the surface of the water and you know that there’s the potential for complete devastation (that may sound overly dramatic, but if you know, you know).

My current “shark sightings” are coming in the form of lab tests that point to yet another diagnosis for my daughter. Thankfully, she’s not exhibiting symptoms yet. However, like sharks, this disease attacks when the person is already compromised. If I had to sum up the list of factors that cause it to flare, I could do it in one word – LIFE.

The thing is, sometimes sharks don’t attack and sometimes odd lab results are just that – odd lab results. Other times, both can be brutal. I don’t know how this is going to go, but I do know that there are a lot of others who are also watching sharks circle. We’re scared, but we keep swimming (we really don’t have any other choice).

If that’s you, please know that you’re not alone.
